General Info

Tucked right into the lively stretch of Courtenay Place, The Catch Sushi Bar at 48 Courtenay Place, Te Aro, Wellington offers a casual yet satisfying dining experience that feels both convenient and memorable. From the moment you step in, the atmosphere leans relaxed and welcoming, making it an easy choice whether you’re stopping by for a quick bite or settling in for a late-night meal.

The menu is where things really shine. It’s thoughtfully put together, balancing classic sushi staples with a few comforting extras that broaden the appeal. The Salmon Sashimi stands out immediately-fresh, clean, and sliced just right, it delivers that melt-in-your-mouth texture sushi lovers expect. Alongside it, the Shrimp Maki Roll adds a nice contrast, offering a satisfying bite with a subtle sweetness that pairs well with soy sauce and wasabi.

What makes this place especially approachable, though, is how it blends traditional Japanese flavors with more familiar comfort food. The Fried Fish Corn and Chicken Nugs bring a playful twist to the menu, making it easy for groups with mixed tastes to find something they enjoy. Meanwhile, smaller bites like Edamame and Gyōza round out the experience, giving you plenty of options to share or snack on while waiting for your mains.

Service here is designed with flexibility in mind. If you’re on the go, takeout is quick and efficient, while delivery makes it just as easy to enjoy your favorite rolls at home. The late-night food offering is a big plus, especially in a busy area like Te Aro where dining options can thin out after hours. And if you’re planning to drive in, the availability of parking nearby adds a layer of convenience that’s often overlooked in central locations.

Dessert is also part of the experience, giving you a chance to end your meal on a sweet note without needing to hop to another spot. It’s a small detail, but it completes the overall dining flow nicely.

From a reviewer’s perspective, what stands out most is how The Catch Sushi Bar balances variety and consistency. The location is easy to find, the menu is approachable yet satisfying, and the overall vibe makes you feel comfortable whether it’s your first visit or your fifth. It’s the kind of place that fits seamlessly into your routine, whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch, meeting friends, or winding down after a long day in Wellington.

What customers say?

“ I am usually not a big fan of sushi but this was awesome. It was my first time going to a restaurant with a sushi train. Everything looked so delicious! They charge by the plate so you basically just grab whatever you like the look of off the train and eat it. They the bill gets totalled up at the end by the number and colour of plates you ate. I was actually surprised at the cost. It wasn't the cheapest around but it definitely wasn't expensive. I felt it was money well spent for the freshness and quality of the sushi. Plus I had so much fun! I ate alot tofu sushi and some karaage chicken. The chicken was to die for! Highly recommend that! And the tofu is a great alternative for those with dietary needs like vegetarian or vegan. There were also other options i noticed; avocado sushi, deep fried tofu and beans. The restaurant is also family friendly. Kids love the sushi train! I saw quite a number of kids and even a new born in the restaurant. The staff are very accommodating and gave fantastic service. They also had a bathroom which was very clean and free lemon water. If you are wanting to park really close, try find a spot on Allen Street. It seems like all the parking in the city is paid. But it only cost us $5 for an hour. ”

“ This is quality sushi. The dishes are fresh and the price reasonable. The train itself goes very quickly so you have to be a little nimble to grab your dish without making a mess. Good variety and made-to-order items available too. ”

- G Mac -

“ Fresh sushi and plates which were all very delicious. Satisfied my salmon sashimi cravings and didnt intend on getting dumplings but they were crispy, hot, and juicy Crispy prawn maki roll and salmon nigiri were great as well. Cant go wrong with edamame so overall good experience. Customer service was good. ”

“ Large variety of sushi available, along with hot foods that are sometimes already available or can be ordered. 3 of us attended, my opinion was some of the sushi was not great quality. Hubby was quite happy with the food he ate. And son loved his foot (only ate plain inari) We found this was the most expensive sushi train we have been to and pricing didn’t really match the quality of food. Staff were lovely and very accommodating. Easy to get to, with a little side street parking option just a couple of shops away. ”

“ Not been for years, and recently decided to go back. Great decision too. Food quality is still top notch and added to the friendly staff its a winning combination. ”

- Penelope England -

“ Great sushi, selection was decent and it's easy to get in and out if time is short. ”

- James Berry -

“ Loved the sushi. Really fresh fish and good portion! Be sure to order the scallop and Tarakihi sushi :) ”

- Joshua Soo -

“ Owned and operated by Chinese but a very good place to have sushi train. It is actually better than most of the sushi trains in Japan. Price is on the upper end so please prepare to bring lots of money! ”
